Bovine aortic arch variant in humans: clarification of a common misnomer.
The term "bovine arch" is widely used to describe a common anatomic variant of the human aortic arch branching. This so-called bovine aortic arch has no resemblance to the bovine aortic arch. We describe the most common human aortic arch branching patterns and compare these with the bovine aortic arch.

I knew that the congenital variation of the human aortic arch, with the left common carotid artery originating from the innominate artery, has nothing to do with the anatomy of the bovine arch; however, it was very useful of Layton et al to point out the discordance of the anatomic terminology. The weakness of the article, though, is that the authors did not trace who introduced and coined the ...

Bovine aortic arch refers to the most common variant of aortic arch branching in humans. This configuration can be found in approximately 27% of the population and can be further divided into 2 subtypes. In the less usual subtype (7%, Figure 1 – panel A), the innominate artery (usually 1-2.5 cm long) trifurcates into the left common carotid artery, the right common carotid artery and the right ...
متن کاملStenting of Variant Left Carotid Artery Using Brachial Artery Approach in a Patient with Unusual Type of Bovine Aortic Arch.
Bovine aortic arch is the most frequently encountered variation in human aortic arch branching. A 63-year-old Asian male presented with symptomatic severe stenosis of left carotid artery originating from the brachiocephalic trunk. Selective engagement to the left carotid artery was unsuccessful using transfemoral approach. We reported on a successful left carotid artery stenting case using righ...
متن کاملSynchronous Carotid Bifurcation Endarterectomy and Retrograde Kissing Stenting of the Innominate and Left Common Carotid Artery in a Patient with a Bovine Aortic Arch
Management of the symptomatic multiple stenosis of supra-aortic vessels (MSSVs) in a "bovine" aortic arch (BAA) configuration is infrequently reported. The optimal treatment choice remains debatable. A successful hybrid treatment for a proximal critical stenosis of the innominate and left common carotid artery was performed in a high-risk patient with a tandem symptomatic lesion in the right ca...
